What is DARPA?

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency funds high-risk, high-reward research that conventional programs won't touch. DARPA invented the internet, GPS, and stealth technology. It exists to create breakthrough capabilities for national defense.

DARPA is different from SBIR. There are no standing solicitations. Program managers have significant discretion to fund the companies and researchers they believe in. The best path in is through a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) or a direct relationship with a program manager.

Proposals require deep technical specificity. Vague ideas don't get funded. But the companies that do get funded often build technologies that define the next decade.
